I’ve read many articles and repairmanuals on bass setup, and I’vepersonally set up thousands of bassesas a professional. So when PG askedme to write a DIY piece on the subject,I thought, “What can I bring to thisdiscussion that’s truly helpful? Is there alittle something I can describe that youdon’t already know?”
In this article, we’ll cover the essentialswith the goal of helping you decide whatyou can handle yourself and what youshould leave to your local repair technician.Even if there are aspects of thejob you’re not prepared to attempt onyour own, it’s good to understand what’sinvolved with a bass setup. Knowing thesteps and terminology will let you communicatemore confidently and effectivelywith your repair guy or gal.
More than likely you’re thinkingabout setup because in some way, yourinstrument is not performingthe way you’d like. To pinpointany problems, we need to lookat all the factors that affect yourinstrument’s overall playability, sound, and function.
Preliminary Inspection
Our journey begins with ageneral inspection (Photo1), which consists of playingthe instrument while askingyourself these questions: Is theaction too high? Too low? Arethere buzzing frets? If so, thatindicates a need for adjustment. Guitar Tapping Artists1. A setup begins with a preliminary,hands-on inspection of your bass.Check playability and listen for issueslike buzzing frets and hardwarerattles. List any problems you find.
While you’re at it, workthe volume and tone controls, checking for noise. Gently jigglethe 1/4' plug at the output jackto check it for noise. Are thereany hardware-related rattles?Take notes on all your observationsand list any issues youneed to address.
Carsoft 6.5 bmw. After you’ve given your bass ahands-on evaluation, you’re readyto get to work on the setup.
Tip: Because the adjustmentsthat control playability areaffected by string gauge andtension, be sure your bass sportsthe type of strings you plan touse. If you change string gauge, you’ll need to do a fresh setup toaccommodate the new strings.
Step 1: Measurethe Neck Relief
We start with checking the“relief” or amount of bend in theneck. I often see people sightingdown the neck from all anglesand making some very ballparkassessments about neck relief. But the precise and accurate wayto measure relief is to use thestrings as a straightedge. Here’show to measure neck relief:
1. Tune your bass to pitch.Use the primary tuning youput this instrument in whenperforming or recording.
2. With your fretting hand, hold your lowest stringagainst the 1st fret as if youwere playing that note. 2. To gauge the amount of relief in your neck, use both hands to simultaneouslyfret the 4th string at the 1st fret and somewhere between the 14thand 16th frets. At the mid point between these two fretted notes, look atthe gap between the bottom of the string and the top of the frets. To getanother perspective on this gap, bounce the string against the frets withyour picking-hand index finger. ![]()
Tip: Make sure you continuallycheck the tuningof your bass so it stays atpitch. This is crucial formaking accurate measurementsand adjustments.
Step 2:Adjust the Truss Rod
This is very important: If youdon’t feel comfortable adjustingyour truss rod or don’t have theproper tool, take this to yourlocal qualified repair technician. You can really mess upyour instrument by strippingthe threads on your truss rodor over tightening and breakingthis critical part of theneck. Whether the truss rodis adjusted via a male hex nut,a female socket, or a Phillipsnut at the neck heel, make sureyour tool has a snug fit so youdon’t strip out this vital part.
3. To remove the neck to expose atruss rod that’s installed at the heel, take off the strings and back outthe screws at the neck plate.4. Once the screws have releasedthe neck, gently pull it free from thebody being careful not to scratchthe neck on the exposed screwtips.
The vast majority of trussrods adjust clockwise totighten and counter-clockwiseto loosen. If your truss rod islocated at the headstock, lookdown the neck from headstockto body to determine clockwiseand counter-clockwisedirection. If your truss rodadjustment is at the heel of theneck, you’ll need to remove it(Photos 3 and 4). The movementswill be the same whenyou look from the heel down
Tip: If you have any doubts abouthow to adjust a truss rod, get a guitarrepair book or study the manualthat came with your instrument. Many manufacturers offer freeonline instructions for adjusting thetruss rods on their guitars.
If you decide you want tochange the gap between thestring and fret, here’s the process:
1. To reduce the gap betweenstring and fret, tighten thetruss rod. Conversely, toincrease the space betweenstring and fret, loosenit. Move the truss rod inquarter-turn increments.
2. Retune and recheck reliefeach time you move the rod. Bass Guitar Finger Tapping
Continue the processuntil you get the desiredgap between the string andfret. Again, unless you havea specific gap in mind, shoot for the thickness ofone or two business cards.
Check your version of Windows and then download the right version of Media Creation Tool.Step 2: Run Media Creation Tool as an administrator. If your bass requiresadjustments at the neckheel (Photos 5 and 6),rather than the headstock, you’ll face the tediousprospect of reinstalling theneck and restringing tocheck each adjustment.
Tip: If your truss rod seems verydifficult to adjust, or stops moving,or makes a loud noise, see alocal repair tech. Although adjustinga truss rod may be foreignto you, all qualified techniciansunderstand how it functions. It’sdefinitely worth paying the priceto have this done right.
There are several adjustmentsthat affect action, but they need to be done inthe correct order. Becauseyour decisions about allthe other action-relatedadjustments are based onneck relief, it’s importantto deal with the truss rodfirst. Once you’ve made anynecessary truss-rod adjustments, you’re ready to moveon to the other factors thatcontrol playability.
7. To reattachthe neck, carefully place the heelinto the neck pocket and then insertthe screws by hand, slipping themthrough the body and seating thetips into their respective holes. 8.Tighten the neck screws securely. As you do this, use your free handto control the screwdriver tip so itdoesn’t slip out and mar the body.
If you’ve removed theneck to make truss rodadjustments, reattach itnow (Photos 7 and 8),restring, and retune.
